Cell & Tissue Engineering Lab

Laboratory of Cell and Tissue Engineering has been organized by Shohreh Mashayekhan since 2011. The research interests (ie. cellular differentiation, maturation, functionalization etc.) as well as the regions providing the reaction field (ie. 2-D and 3-D cultures), are motivated to establish methodologies for development of bio-mimic structure mostly focused on cartilage, heart, nerve and bone tissue engineering and regeneration.

The success of cell-based therapies for tissue repair is dependent on the ability to control the growth and differentiation of the applied stem cells. The nature of biomaterials and growth factor availability, the presence of mechanical and electrical signals, etc. can all potently induce the desired cell fate and direct cellular responses, in order to regulate the formation and integration of multiple tissue types, and to maintain long-term functionality when introduced into the body. We engineer both 2D and 3D systems by integrating advanced micro- and nano- fabrication technologies using appropriate biomaterials to mimic different extracellular environments and native tissue architecture and directing stem cell behavior.
