My interest in science originated from my father’s library. I studied my primary school in a small village while my father’s library was unique there. I remember that my mother has always been encouraging me to pursue the brilliant academic footprints of her cousin Prof. Hossein Sadeghi who is now a retired heart surgeon at CHUV in University of Lausanne. After I immigrated with my family to Mashad city, using innovation and hard work I became able to actualize my childhood dreams one by one and it became a lifelong quest for understanding.
My interest in computer science dates back to my years in National Organization for Development of Exceptional Talents (NODET) high school, when I attracted to mathematics and computer algorithms during my studies for Iran’s Mathematics Olympiad. After achieving several national honors in Mathematics Olympiad; with guidance of my elder brother Reza Sadeghi who has won silver and gold medals of International Mathematical Olympiads (1994, 1995) I realized that I can find applications of pure and abstract theories that I have experienced, in computer science and engineering, and it was the main reason for me to choose computer science and engineering.
After enrolling in computer engineering department of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad I tried different branches of computer engineering. Taking two life changing courses helped me a lot to find out a favorite approach in my studies. The first course was Computer Graphics; during which I implemented some basic CG algorithms and used them to make a simple paintbrush tool. The second course was Multimedia Systems in which I learned basics of VR and VRML and designed ‘Computer Statistical and Information Center’ of Ferdowsi University of Mashad’s building with VRML as term project. Doing these projects provided enough theoretical knowledge and practical experience I required in my bachelor thesis.
During my graduate studies at Iran University of Science and Technology I extended my knowledge in fields of Computational Geometry, Information Visualization and Software Engineering. After presenting a lecture on “Using Coloring Technique in Tiling Problems” in our department seminar sessions I focused on fractal geometry and visualization of 3D natural phenomena such as trees, mountains, clouds, etc. in a virtual environment. Also in this period I better benefited the rewards of teamwork by attracting two other M.Sc students to fractal visualization. The research prototype, called FractVRML, provides an X3D profile suitable for visualization of these natural contents. FractVRML separates into two categories of nodes: data structure nodes and fractal nodes which support main natural objects of every virtual environment. Contributions of the work are presented in CG related conferences.
Another experience that I gained during my M.Sc studies was teaching experience. I taught undergraduate courses at some universities with goal of facing different students to learn how to organize points and express concepts in a coherent manner to different audiences. In addition to my study and teaching duties I spent some time playing for the department’s basketball team and doing other off-campus activities such as playing Guitar. Afterwards, I was faced with the required Iranian military service, and I spent a great deal of time obtaining exemption from it.
While being very eager to know new things related to Computer Graphics field, I am looking forward to continue my career as a Researcher/Academic Instructor at a prestigious university or a special effect designer and developer for movie studios after accomplishment of my PhD degree. I am confident that my determination and hard work will help me to overcome obstacles of this path. I hope your institution will give me the opportunity to grow as an individual and actualize my potentials in this area.
