Research Focus: Our areas of research in the Social and Cognitive Robotics Lab. at Sharif University of Technology are:

1) Social and Cognitive Robotics

This line of research focuses on designing/using Social and Cognitive Robotics, Virtual Reality Systems, and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI) platforms for education and rehabilitation of children with special needs (e.g. children with autism, children with hearing problems, children with cerebral palsy). Our researches include robots’ design and fabrication, serious games’ design, artificial intelligence and control, conducting educational/clinical interventions for children, developing cognitive architectures for social robots, mathematical modeling of participants’ behaviors during HRI, and empowering robots to analyze users’ behaviors automatically and then react adaptively.

2) Brain-Machine Interface (BMI)

We are currently working on using brain signals of humans and/or non-human primates (including EEG or Electrophysiological recordings) to control robotic platforms (such as robotic arms, prostheses, etc.). Our goal is to extract features of brain signals that represent the participant’s intentions, analyze them, and provide appropriate real-time commands for the mechatronic devices. We hope that with the collaborations of the involved neuroscientists, engineers, psychologists, etc., such studies would lead to understand more about the mechanisms of the brain and restore useful functions to individuals with special needs. In this line, our researches are being carried out in close collaboration with the Brain Engineering Research Center at IPM, Iran.
